What is it?
No it’s not a exotic bat from Australia!
The innovative FFX Flying Fox is a portable remote control towing system for making precise discharge measurements with ADCP tethered boats on a temporary span of rope.
How does it work?
The Flying Fox represents the latest technology for towing an ADCP for flow measurement on a stream. The remote controlled instrument operates on a low stretch, high strength rope secured temporarily (or permanently) across the stream.
Easy to carry and with the ability to operate wirelessly up to 574 ft, the Flying Fox keeps the operator safe and dry and away from any potential hazards…especially during high water situations.
Things you need to know
- Precise discharge measurements can be made almost anywhere as no bridge or other infrastructure is required.
- Stable and secure…will not detach
- The user selectable speed ensures a very smooth and stable transect, resulting in more accurate discharge measurements.
- If logs or other debris are seen to be moving downstream toward the ADCP, you can immediately increase the speed of the Flying Fox and move the ADCP safely out of harm’s way.
- The Visual Low Battery warning with audible beeper and quick swap battery compartment ensures the Flying Fox keeps on measuring hour after hour.
- Easy remote control from riverbank with a wireless range of up to 574 ft
- High Torque motor easily tackles any incline
“The USGS gave us their wishlist…and we came up with the Flying Fox”.

Why this matters
With the Flying Fox it’s now possible for Hydrographers to make ADCP measurements almost anywhere on a river or stream, no longer restricted to bridges or cableways. For us, it’s exciting to note that the Flying Fox originated as a customer request, as have many of our best products. One of our most valuable resources is the customer feedback we receive and integrate directly into our design and engineering process.
