Expand your Cableway measurement possibilities

Welcome to our family of innovative Winch and Cableway solutions.

No matter how challenging your application we can help.

Whether your requirements call for a fully automated remote controlled Cableway System that can measure discharge with mechanical Current Meters or Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler’s (ADCP); a portable ADCP Towing and Positioning System such as our acclaimed Flying Fox and Cable Fox; or one of our bridge, boat or bank operated Single and Double Drum Winches (Reels), we’re confident we can provide a cableway or winch ideal for the task.

Our comprehensive model lineup is transforming the way Hydrographers are able to measure water flow with unprecedented flexibility and safety…so let’s meet the family!

Flying Fox – Go Anywhere!

From its beginnings as a customer request, to gutsy prototype, all the way to its professional debut as one of the most innovative flow measurement instruments on the market today, the Flying Fox facilitates precision discharge measurements using ADCPs while making the life of Hydrographers across the globe safer and easier. Innovative, portable with user friendly remote control, the Flying Fox towing system for making discharge measurements with ADCP tethered boats on a temporary span of rope is sure to become your go to instrument for flow measurement on the fly.

“The USGS gave us their wishlist…and we came up with the Flying Fox.”
-Wayne Van Schelven-Chief Engineer-HyQuest Solutions

Features:

  • User selectable speed ensures a smooth and stable transect, resulting in more accurate discharge measurements.
  • If logs or other debris are seen to be moving downstream toward the ADCP, the user can immediately increase the speed of the Flying Fox and move the ADCP safely out of harm’s way.
  • The weatherproof remote control with backlit LCD displays transect speed (user selectable from 0-1.6ft/s), distance traversed, wireless signal strength, battery voltage & current draw while operating.
  • Rugged weatherproof instrument case.
  • Wireless operation up to 574 ft range.
  • Remotely controlled from riverbank.
  • Loss Protection: Safety lock will not allow tow vehicle to separate from rope.

Applications

The Flying Fox allows discharge measurements to be made almost anywhere as no bridge or other infrastructure is required.

Cable Fox – Smooth Operator

ADCP Positioning System

With a wireless remote control range of more than 1,300 ft, on-the-fly adjustable traversing speed (0.1 to 2.0 ft/sec), integrated encoder for across the stream distance measurement, raise/lower capability up to 220 lbs and its ability to operate on any new or existing cableway without additional equipment, the Cable Fox is an indispensable instrument for making measurement in challenging locations.

Features:

  • Powerful Motorization
  • Variable speed
  • Consistent speed
  • Smooth transects
  • Integrated encoder
  • Multiple frequencies (902.5 to 914.5 MHz)
  • Long range remote

Applications

Any existing cableway with a main cable in place (3/8″ to 1 1/4″)

Hornet Plus – Bringing New Life to Condemned Cableways

Developed to perform discharge measurements from fixed cableways using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) OR mechanical type current meter, the Hornet is an ideal solution for retro fitting to an existing manned cableway system, whether currently operational or condemned, minimizing the personal injury risk associated with this type of gauging.

“The tough, sophisticated, ever capable Hornet Plus continues to impress with its ability to handle ACDPs, flood gauging with current meters and sounding weights up to 300 lb, automatic angle of drift correction and full wireless control.
-Peter Ward, Founder/CEO Hydrological Services America

Features

  • Measure discharge with ADCP or Current Meter
  • Remote control 1 km range
  • Variable traversing speed up to 3 ft/s
  • Auto correction of horizontal distance due to cable sag
  • Auto correction of observed depth (angle of drift)

Applications

  • Remote locations
  • Wide Spans
  • Flood conditions
  • Ideal for new sites or retrofit to existing manned cableways

Span Master – Manual Cableway

A simple, easy to operate towing and positioning system for
performing water discharge measurements using ADCP or Radar
technology. The unit was designed to aid in water discharge
measurement where simple cableway installation is required to drive
the ADCP across the river and back.

The Span Master consists of a high quality manual winch with
distance counter which easily bolts to any 4 inch galvanized post.
The winch is manually operated at the desired speed providing stable
and more accurate ADCP measurements.

Features

• High Quality Gear-driven bronze and stainless steel winch
• Easy to install – bolts directly to any 4 in galvanized post
• All mounting hardware included
• Includes 300 ft of 3/16″ stainless steel traversing cable
• Robust, corrosion resistant construction
• Forward and Reverse Operation
• Multi-digit distance counter
• Positive Weston-style brake
• Ability to hold load at any position
• Span up to 328 ft
• Optional ADCP stabilizing weight
• *12V DC Powered model also available (SMK1/PD)

Stream Gauging Winches

WS250/400/500
Hand Operated Single Drum Winches

Our Single Drum Winches can be deployed from boats or bridges and are designed for ease of operation and serviceability in the field. Robust, compact, portable, light-weight and handled easily and safely by one person. With a choice of 3 winch models and 2 cable diameters (Manual Gauging Winches) you are sure to find the right winch for the job.

Barossa Manual Double Drum Winch is a bank operated double drum winch for ADCP and current meter measurements. The Barossa enables the operator to change from sounding mode to traversing mode very quickly by engaging the drive gears on each drum. Secondly, the double drum concept eases traversing as the forces exerted by the gauging weight are largely cancelled out. Load capacity is up to 154 lb and Span capacity is up to 200 ft.

The Latrobe Double Drum (Model DDT900)  is a manually (hand) operated winch capable of handling Gauging Weights up to 198 lb and can be used on small cableways up to 395 ft span. The main feature of this design is that it enables the operator to quickly change from sounding model to traversing mode very quickly by engaging the drive gears on each drum. Once the carriage is moved into position for the next sounding operate on, the traversing drum is then quickly disengaged.

So now that you’ve met the family…let us know how we can help you find the ideal cableway or winch for your specific application.
